Seniors as Mentors and Leaders Project
Social isolation can be deadly for older adults, and the Seniors as Mentors and Leaders Project came together in response to this critical issue. The project ran from April 2017 - March 2018, delivered in partnership by Cambridge Council on Aging; Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank; Housing Cambridge; and Social Planning Council of Cambridge North Dumfries. Funding was provided for this project by the Government of Canada's New Horizons for Seniors Project.
This project prepared older adult volunteers to act as mentors and peer supports for other older adults in Cambridge. Project mentors engaged in regular one on one visits with older adults who were socially isolated, or at risk of becoming isolated, and helped to connect them with community resources. This project aimed to make a lasting impact on issues of social isolation among local seniors by promoting and facilitating social interaction, community participation, and volunteerism. The project culminated in a learning event called Taking the "I" out of Isolation.
